West African Drum & Dance with Mitch Caponetta

Mitch Caponetta is a local musician specializing in percussion music from Guinea and Mali, west Africa. For the past few years he has traveled extensively to learn from the true keepers of this music.

To make a rhythm full usually requires six people, three on the dunun(bass drums) and three on a djembe. Each person plays his or her own specific part and when played together, creates a complex but beautiful rhythm. Rotating people from part to part is the best way to learn these rhythms.

Dance is extremely important with these rhythms and some of the dances will also be taught. Mitch can provide drums for a class of 12 people. Mitch and his wife have lived in the uptown area for ten years. Mitch has been a faculty member at N.O.C.C.A.(The New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts) for eight years.

Mitch teaches drum classes at Ashe Cultural Center and performs regularly with Kumbuka Drum and Dance. Mitch can provide drums for up to 15 people. If you have a djembe or dundun, please bring it. Bring a chair as well, if possible though some will be provided.
